    Sri Lanka bans school teachers from accepting gifts from students

    Nov 19, Colombo: Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam today said he has signed a special circular banning school teachers from accepting gifts from students.
    Speaking during an event at Naakkawatta, Mahinda Central College in Kuliyapitiya today, Minister Kariyawasam said, parents have lodged many complaints about the issue, especially in state schools in the country.
    He said parents have been giving gifts to teachers and now it has become a trend to collect funds from parents to distribute gifts among teachers.
    Minister Kariyawasam pointed out that teachers have been paid a substantial monthly salary and such practices should be terminated following the implementation of the circular. School principals will be issued directives to implement the circular, the Minister said adding that the circular will be sent to all divisional and provincial directors by Monday.
    He said the present administration is committed to eliminate discrepancies in the education sector.
