Mavai Senathirajah the newface of the TNA

The General Secretary of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Mavai Senathirajah was unanimously selected as the new leader of the Illankai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) in the party convention which began in Vavuniya yesterday (6).
He replaces former ITAK Leader R. Sampanthan who had earlier decided to step down as ITAK leader mainly due to his advanced age. However, he will continue as TNA leader.

The ITAK is the largest and most influential party in the TNA. Since the TNA is not registered as a political party at the Elections Department, it contests elections under the ITAK name and electoral sign.

The new ITAK leader Somasundaram Senathirajah, commonly known as Mavai Senathirajah, is a Member of Parliament from Jaffna District. He is 71 years old.
Mavai was a National List MP for the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) in the Sri Lankan Parliament between 1989 and 1994, and between 1999 and 2000. In 1989, he was named in place of assassinated TULF leader Appapillai Amirthalingam. In 1999, he was named in place of Neelan Tiruchelvam, who was also assassinated. From 2000 he has been an elected Member of Parliament from Jaffna District.
