The General Secretary of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Mavai Senathirajah was unanimously selected as the new leader of the Illankai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) in the party convention which began in Vavuniya yesterday (6).
He replaces former ITAK Leader R. Sampanthan who had earlier decided to step down as ITAK leader mainly due to his advanced age. However, he will continue as TNA leader.
The ITAK is the largest and most influential party in the TNA. Since the TNA is not registered as a political party at the Elections Department, it contests elections under the ITAK name and electoral sign.
